¿Why do we need colour protection and perfume?

Dye and perfume molecules often contain specific chemical bonds that can be susceptible to environmental factors and are therefore very sensitive to factors such as temperature, ultraviolet light, pH changes, oxidation and metal catalysis. They are also influenced by factors such as chemical interaction with other components of the formula.

This high sensitivity means that, when exposed to these factors, they can undergo changes in their structure, thus losing their original properties and altering the sensoriality of the product.

 What we can rarely control…

Once our products leave our warehouses, it is difficult to know at what temperature they will be stored, for how long or whether or not they will be exposed to sunlight. All this can alter the colour and smell of our product.

Oxidation. How does it happen?

Colour oxidation and perfune can occur via two main routes:

  • Direct oxidation: in which external factors trigger chemical processes that end up breaking the chemical bonds of the molecules.
  • Indirect oxidation: in which secondary compounds generated in the environment (free radicals) contribute to the degradation of the original molecules.

How do we prevent it??

By using protective elements such as antioxidants, UV absorbers and chelating agents. These elements will slow down the oxidation of the product as much as possible for as long as possible, acting as a shield against oxidation and reducing its impact.

Safety in fragrance and colour protectors

In terms of safety, the industry is constantly evolving, with brands extending the Black List of perfume and colour protection ingredients, in particular synthetic UV filters. This is due to their potential long-term health effects such as toxicity and endocrine disruption, as well as the environmental impact they can have.

What are consumers looking for?

Today, consumers are looking for eco-friendly, healthy and sustainable brands and products with UV filters that protect both their bodies and our planet.

Sensient new generation of protectors

Sensient has developed a new generation of colour and fragrance protectants that promote the development of clean, biodegradable formulations that are environmentally friendly and safer for users.

Covabsorb Nature GP and Sensisorb Biomim

These two ingredients represent Sensient’s 3rd generation of fragrance and colour protectors. Covabsorb® Nature GP esa patented 100% natural protector, a combination of natural UV absorbers with anti-oxidant properties for colour and fragrance. Sensisorb Biomim is a unique compound inspired by nature to provide UV protection with SPF-boosting properties, colour protection and fragrance protection.
